Time Well Spent, Farewell

The video below addresses three deeply felt learning’s from this program, several long-term goals of mine, a farewell message to my instructor and colleagues, and my contact information.

Three quotes that are food for the soul…

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”
- Frederick Douglass

“Free the child’s potential, and you will transform him into the world.”
- Maria Montessori

“We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that he is someone today.”
- Stacia Tausche

Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: Internationally

After I returned to my blog, I realized that all of the information was not copied from the word document; therefore, I am re-posting all of the information. Please make sure to scroll down all the way to the end for the previously omitted information.

In the field of early childhood, leaders have many roles; within those roles, they must find organizations or communities of practice to support their efforts. While exploring, I found three international organizations that interest me. The first organization is the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI). The organization promotes the well-being of children by assisting them in strengthening and evolving with the altering world,” The organization commits to bridging the gap between global initiatives and local needs” (World Forum Foundation, 2015, para. 1). This organization appeals to me, because it assist children and families in adapting to the world; with all of the changes occurring, families would have know what to do if they do not have any help maneuvering through the system.

During my search, I found another organization that appeals to me, the International Child Resource Institute (ICRI). This organization strives to help children and families succeed, despite their hardships. This organization appeals to me, because it provides organizations across the world with technical assistant and consultation. It also ensures that organizations have “The most up-to-date and appropriate data regarding programs, needs assessments, curricula, facility development, program implementation and evaluation, training, cost effectiveness, tax advantages and more is incorporated into each contract or project” (World Forum Foundation, 2015, para. 15).

The final organization that appeals to me is the World Organisation for Early Childhood Education (OMEP). This organization “Promotes the rights of the child to education and care worldwide and supports activities which improve accessibility to high quality education and care(World Forum Foundation, 2015, para. 2). This organization appeals to me, because it encourages family education, training for personnel, and it promotes study and research related to early childhood education and care, all of these things are important in the field of early childhood.

After researching these sites, I found two jobs that interest me; one of them was a position for an Early Childhood Early (ECE) Specialist. They provide technical assistance and training to Head Start Grantees in areas related to school readiness, training and career needs of Grantee staff. The skills or experience needed to fulfill the role includes Bachelor's Degree or its International Equivalent in information services, although a degree in project management is preferred. The applicant must be able to operate a computer, while using Microsoft office suit; he or she must develop presentations, manage groups, and have good communication skills.

The last job I found is position for a Home Visitor; this person is required to visit the homes of different families ensuring the child’s education and other needs are being met. This person must have at least a CDA, but an AA or a BA degree is preferred. The applicant must coordinate family involvement and implementation and ensure that both children and families are succeeding. The applicant must also have knowledge and skills in the field of early childhood.

Below are the links to the organizations I have outlined above and a site for jobs in the field of EC  www.omep.org.gu.se, www.icrichild.org, http://acei.org/, http://www.worldforumfoundation.org/about-us/world-forum-alliance/, http://unjobs.org/vacancies/1425225808634

Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: National/Federal Level

As an educator in the field of early childhood, it is necessary to familiarize myself with websites, journals, articles, and organizations that represent what I stand for; it can help me provide vital information to empower children, families, and educators. While researching, I found three sites that appealed to me as an educator and future director. The first organization that appeals to me is the Association for Early Learning Leaders (AELL) http://www.earlylearningleaders.org. This organization “Promotes leadership development and enhances program quality through the National Accreditation Commission's standards; it serves childcare directors, owners and administrators” (AELL, n. d., para. 1). I chose this organization, because it provides directors, owners, and all early learning professionals with knowledge and skills, giving us the ability provide quality care and education for young children.
The second organization I chose is the National Child Care Association http://www.nccanet.org, this organization supports policies that are beneficial to children, if regulations or policies do not hold the child’s best interest at heart, this organization steps in to advocate for equity. I chose this organization, because as a future director, I will encounter policies and regulations that I do not feel are helpful to the children I serve; this organization will be a good community of practice for other educators and me.
The final organization that appeals to me is Advocates for Youth (AFY) http://www.advocatesforyouth.org/. This organization “Advocates for Youth champions efforts to help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their reproductive and sexual health; they boldly advocate for a more positive and realistic approach to adolescent sexual health” (AFY, 2008, para. 1). I chose this organization, because in the field of early childhood, I often deal with children who are products of teen pregnancies or young mothers. Many of these parents do not have education on sexuality; as a result, they have unintentional pregnancies. I feel that the organization will provide educators, teens, and others with information to make teens aware of the realities of sexuality.
After examining these organizations, it made me think about jobs that interest me. The first job I found is being a provider for a home-base service; this individual works in private homes to teach and care for one or more children. The skills and experience needed to fulfill this role is to be knowledgeable about children and their development; having a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential, Associate’s degree in Child Development, or a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education (Child Development) or equivalent education is preferred in order to provide quality services for children.
The final job that I found was a position for an administrator or director of a center-based program. The skills and experience needed for this job is to be knowledgeable about administrative and managerial skills; this individual should also have knowledge regarding children and their development. This person maintains the required standards for local, state and federal agencies, they ensure that the teachers are educated and well trained; they must be able to establish and maintain a budget, and be able to hire and terminate employees. These are only a few of the skills the director must have. Recommended education for this position includes having an Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education, a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development or its equivalent, with coursework in child care administration, and or a Graduate degree in Child Care Administration. For more information about these and other jobs in the field of early childhood education, visit this website http://www.childcareservices.org/_downloads/CareersInEarlyChildhoodGuide_NC.pdf.
Above I have outlined organizations that appeal to me and some jobs that I would like to have. These organizations have provided imperative information for individuals that are interested in the field of early childhood. These organizations are good sources of communities of practice. These jobs listed and the website I have provided will offer available jobs for those who are seeking a career in the field of early childhood. With this in mind, shoot far above the stars to advocate for and empower children, families, and educators around the world.

Exploring Roles in the ECE Community: Local and State Levels

As an educator and a future director, I have learned to seek help from others in the field of early childhood. Support systems are needed, because it gives the educators someone to lean on that is familiar with the joys and challenges of the early childhood field (EC or ECF). In most cities and states, there are organizations or communities of practices (COP) that are available for individuals in all professions. As I researched my local and state areas, I found three organizations or COP’s that appealed to me.
The Southern Early Childhood Association (SECA) is one of the organizations that appeals to me. SECA was established in 1948, it rally’s all early childhood educators, administrators, and anyone who works with children and families to improve education and care for children in the southern region (SECA, 2015). It appeals to me, because they have conferences, at different locations annually to promote new ideas, tools, and techniques to assist educators and administrators in improving the overall quality of life for children and families.
The Mississippi Early Childhood Association (MsECA) is an organization that operates in the state of MS. It is a “non-profit, educational organization…concerned about the care and education of young children; it provides a means for persons interested in young children, increases knowledge, brings relevant issues to the attention of the public, and improves health and educational standards for children” (MsECA, n. d., para. 1). This organization appeals to me, because it is a local organization that supports the efforts of the educators and administrators in Mississippi. Often, MS does not have any positive affiliations related to children and families, with this organization within arm’s reach, I am able to provide others and myself with knowledge to help improve how we educate and care for the children in MS.
The Mississippi Association of Educators (MAE) is a local organization that “Advocates great public schools for every child by empowering members, providing services and promoting parental/community involvement” (MAE, 2015, para. 2). This organization appeals to me, because it has workshops to provide educators with knowledge on common core standards for children, and it has other developmental workshops to increase the knowledge of educators and afford them with more opportunities to advance in the ECF.
These organizations provide me with a COP to support my efforts with any job in the field of EC. While researching, I found two jobs that interest me including being a Director of Educational Programs (Private School with Preschool Division) and Early Childhood Educator for Public Charter Schools. Both jobs require the applicant to have a Master’s degree in early childhood or a related area; the job for Director of Educational Programs, (Private School with Preschool Division), requires the applicant to have teaching or supervisory experience.
Overall, my education and experience in the field of EC affords me many opportunities; with a Master’s degree, there are many jobs that I could pursue in the ECF. Having knowledge and support through COP’s help me to foster new skills, education, and knowledge related to children and families; with this in mind, I will continue to gain knowledge to help improve the quality of life for the children and families I serve.
